Exaclty how big Salman Khan is today

Even Salman Khan’s worst critics recognize that he is the biggest star in Bollywood today. In what has possibly been the one of the most glorious periods ever in this industry, Salman has delivered three huge blockbusters between Sep 2010 & Sep 2011, in Dabangg, Ready and Bodyguard. Many of his diehard fans privately recognize that none of these were cinematic masterpieces. But they worked purely on the charisma of their lead star. Take Salman Khan out of them, and there will be no Dabangg, no Ready, no Bodyguard.

So exactly how big is the Salman phenomenon? How far ahead of the pack is he, today?

We started tracking star popularity through our product Stars India Loves (SIL) from November 2010 onwards. Every month, a large sample of cine-goers is asked to name their two favorite male and female stars each. Unlike some other star ratings based on the box office, SIL is based purely on the consumer’s preference for the stars at that particular point of time. Hence, it is future-oriented in nature.

Since the SIL research asks people to name two stars, the total percentage share of all the stars adds up to 200. The chart below shows Salman’s month-on-month progression on SIL. As can be seen, even two months after the release of Dabangg, he was at 34%, just 3% ahead of Shahrukh Khan at 31%. If we back-project, it is safe to say that till August 2010, Shahrukh would have been ahead of Salman. But since then, Salman has simply bulldozed his way to the top, widening the gap, month-on-month. Shahrukh is still no. 2 in October 2011, at 27% share. But the 3% gap is now a staggering 25%.

The chart illustrates that his journey over the last year has been in two parts. The Dabangg phenomenon gave him ascendency till February this year, where he peaked at 46%. And just as his share was beginning to saturate, Ready gave it another fillip, this time a huge one, taking him past the 50% mark. Bodyguard couldn’t take it further up, but even two months after its release, Salman shows no signs of losing share.

Who did Salman grab this 18% share from?
No one person lost a sizeable chunk. But four stars lost some share in this period. Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor (till Rockstar) have not had a major release for a while now. Amitabh Bachchan has had a very lean year by his busy standards. The only “real” drop in share has been Akshay Kumar’s, who moved down from 24% in April 2011, to 16% now, losing three ranks within six months, down from no. 3 to no. 6.

Which target audience is he the strongest in?
That’s probably the secret behind his success – he is appealing to every single target segment today, equally well. He crosses 50% share amongst males, females, youth, adults, and in each research market. All other stars are skewed towards a particular audience profile. For example, Shahrukh, Ranbir & Shahid are heavily female audience skewed. While Ajay, Devgn, Akshay and Aamir are male audience skewed. But not Salman. Evidently, everyone loves him. Just about everyone.

2012 is another big year for Salman. Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 release on Eid and Christmas respectively. It may be difficult to gain too much share beyond the 52% he currently controls, but it is safe to say that 2012 won’t end on a lower number either.

The best part about Salman’s success is that he seems entirely untouched by it. Though sometimes, I wish he understood the amount of people power that rests with him today, and used it to make better, more path-breaking films.

But then, if we don’t have four action scenes, five songs, six comedy gags and seven clap traps, it is not a Salman Khan film, right?

Mega star Salman khan on the sets of his upcoming Blockbuster Ek tha tiger..enjoy!!!!

Despite giving a blockbuster in his maiden directorial attempt in Bollywood, the south director Siddique had been scratching for a second project, but now his search is over, thanks to Salman Khan.

We hear Salman Khan used his clout in the industry to help Siddique, the director of the blockbuster Bodyguard, bag his second Bollywood project.

Siddique will now be directing his second Hindi film for the producer duo Shyam Bajaj and Narendra Bajaj.

It’s not yet known whether this film will be a remake of a south film, like Bodyguard was. Moreover, Salman’s inclusion in the cast looks unlikely since the superstar’s date diary is chockfull till the end of 2012. Still, one never knows. Salman Khan might take out some time for a guest appearance in the film.

Not for nothing is he called a KHAN with a Golden heart.or it may be that he is just Being human.

Salman’s iranian fan meets him

Salman’s Iranian fan Myasa who was cycling across India to promote his charity, sadly met with an accident, but finally got to meet her idol
She could not finish the task for which she came to India – tour the country on a bicycle to promote her heartthrob Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s charity, Being Human. She had to discontinue her expedition as she met with an accident in Udaipur. But that has made Myasa Bakhshandehha, the 23-year-old law student at the Gorgan University of Iran, a happy girl, because she finally met Salman Khan. “I was sure that I will not return until I meet him,” she had said, and on his part, the Dabangg Khan was overwhelmed too, to meet his passionate fan.

Myasa, who fractured her left hand, had to be admitted to a hospital in Udaipur, where she underwent a surgery. “It was quite painful, and it will take almost two months to recover fully… my hand has to heal. But I am satisfied and happy that I met my real hero,” said Maysa.

An overwhelmed Sallu gifted her Being Human T-shirts, and even wrote a special message for her, appreciating her efforts. He was surprised to know that Myasa was so enraptured with him, that she took his charity to heart and worked for it so zealously. “I must say you have great courage and passion. You are fighting for a cause. Keep up the spirit,” Salman told her.

“When I told my family in Iran about my accident, they wanted me to return home. But I was adamant. I wanted to try my level best to meet Salman before I left India,” says Maysa, who reached Mumbai by train on Sunday night, and then began to make rounds of his studio and his home. And she was so regular that even Salman’s staff began to recognise her! Salman’s driver was so taken in by Myasa’s dedication, that he appealed to Salman to meet her. “Salman is so tender-hearted that he readily agreed to meet me, his driver told me,”says she adding, “The driver told me when he told Salman that I have come all the way from Iran, he dropped everything else and got ready to meet me. That was really sweet of him. Actually, I wanted to meet him after accomplishing my task of touring the country on cycle to promote his humanitarian work, but I could not do it. I guess fate has other plans for me. But it has not disheartened me.” So, what next for her? “Maybe I will come next year and then fulfil my dream,” she smiles signing off.

Ready grossed around 20 crore nett plus as per early estimates over its second weekend. It was all thanks to a mega Sunday where the film has grossed around 9.25 crore nett as per early estimates. Friday was around 4.50 crore and Saturday around the 6.50 crore nett mark. The jump on Sunday was remarkable.

The first Sunday also showed a huge jump but second Sunday saw an even bigger one. The huge business on Sunday means families are coming out for the film in a big way as normally Sunday jumps are not this big even for mega blockbusters like Three Idiots and Dabangg.

Delhi/UP was the strongest circuit which fell less than 50% from first weekend. Most other circuits fell in the 50-55% range while circuits which have seen slightly lower business comparatively fell a little bit more. The film should cross the 100 crore nett mark by the end of week two.

Salman Khan The KIng

Posted: June 12, 2011 in Salman khan

He is Bollywood’s original bad boy. But two decades after his debut — and debacles—his original image has paled in front of his newly acquired status—that of a phenomenon and the most sought after actor in Hindi cinema. Earlier known for giving flops after a mega hit, now Salman Khan can do no wrong. His latest hit “Ready” may not match the first week collection of his “Dabangg”, but Salman’s message is loud and clear—he’s got his act together after crossing the age of 40, a threshold that most actors dread.

How else does one explain the fact that “Ready” was widely panned by critics but took an extraordinary opening at the box office and continues to sustain itself both in single screens and multiplexes? Says trade analyst Vajir Singh, “We’re seeing a new trend here. Earlier, multiplexgoers weren’t interested in masala entertainers, but now they are. When “Wanted” released, it got maximum single screen audience as it was a mass-oriented film, but “Dabangg” was patronised by both multiplexgoers and the singleplex audience. It all began with “Ghajini”, but it was “Wanted” that really kicked off the trend of wholesale entertainment masala movies. The deal was sealed by Salman’s own film “Dabangg”.”

Critics feel that Salman is unpredictable. A trade pundit said, “Right after “Wanted”, Salman had two big flops in “Main Aur Mrs Khanna” and ” London Dreams”. Between 2005 and 2009, Salman had only two hits —”No Entry” in 2005 and “Partner” in 2007.”

Filmmaker David Dhawan, who has given Salman six hits in his career, says, “I feel he has always been underrated as an actor. Although Salman gives the impression of being nonchalant, he has always taken himself seriously as an actor The fact is that the negatives in his lives have not affected his fan following, the audiences love him too much.” Dhawan also believes Sallu is the Rajinikanth of Bollywood. “Salman Khan is like Rajinikanth, you cannot keep him tied to the script. Like Rajini, he improvises his scenes. Since he is a writer’s son and a writer himself, he has helped me with scenes. Salman’s emphasis on doing things in style and having dialogues with flair comes from his father. Salman the actor is a giver. In fact, there have been times when has given away his scenes to other actors. He has been the most easy actor to work with and is the best entertainer we have today.”

Dramatic past
Like his idol, actor Sanjay Dutt, Salman’s personal life almost took a toll on his career — be it in matters of the heart or law. The actor’s relationships with his women —Sangeeta Bijlani, Somy Ali and Aishwarya Rai —has always been wrought with high-voltage drama. Although he acquired an image of a girlfriend-basher and was an accused in a hit-and-run case, he bounced back with superhit “Tere Naam”, “Baghbaan”, “Garv” and “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi”.

Ranjan Singh, who has been in exhibition business for many years, says, “Although “Garv” was not a big hit, but it took a good opening. Exhibitors love Salman probably because he does more films than all the other Khans. He’s one actor who cuts across all classes, and makes sure that audiences walk into the theatre on the first day of release. Even a film like “Veer” took a huge opening although it failed to impress the audiences later.”

Sociologist Shiv Vishwanath describes the Sallu phenomenon thus: “Salman Khan does not need a good conduct certificate. He doesn’t need a high IQ, he doesn’t have to take stands and he is not an intellectual like the other two Khans. He is the lowest common denominator. He is a hero and a wishlist. All of us dream of being loved even if we are a bit bad. Salman Khan accommodates that world. You don’t have to work hard to be a Salman Khan. It’s a more magical world where people forgive you easily. That’s Salman. He is also strangely the family man without being married —he carries a soap opera of a family with him. It’s a clan. He accommodates them all —from Helen to Malika Arora Khan. He advertises himself. He is his own message, literally and symbolically. He doesn’t have to try hard. What more can you ask? Everything he does echoes himself.”

Psychologist Dr Harish Shetty has his own take on Salman’s success despite the many controversies in his life. “The nuance, the nautanki and the noise is all cool. Salman is perceived as a funny lesser evil. Those who castigated him earlier feel guilty as he pales in the presence of a Raja, Kalmadi or a Maran. ‘Salman itna kharab nahi hai’ is a common refrain.”

Sallu getting serious?

Salman himself does not believe that he has turned into a phenomenon. “Three big hits (“Wanted”, “Dabangg” and “Ready”) do not make me a phenomenon and I don’t believe that these films have worked only because of my presence. It was a team effort.” Having said that, he adds, “I have been lucky that good scripts have begun coming to me. Earlier that was not the case. I did films for friends. Some worked, some didn’t. Besides, every film and ever actor has his own destiny.”

The perception today is that Salman has begun taking his work more seriously now, but the actor does not agree. “Was I not serious in my earlier films like Maine Pyaar Kiya?”

TV ka boss

Salman’s ventures on the small screen with shows like “Dus Ka Dum” and “Bigg Boss” showcased his off-screen personality and helped him to connect with viewers big time. It’s no surprise that the actor readily agreed to do “Bigg Boss 5”. Salman Khan is also the most downloaded star today. “If brands earlier sought out only the macho side of his personality, his TV innings and his philanthropic work have showcased a softer side,” says Salman’s brand manager Vivek Kamath. The fact is that Salman has an amazing body of work as a romantic hero (“Maine Pyar Kiya”, “Hum Aapke Hain Koun”, “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”) as comic hero (“Andaz Apna Apna”, “Partner”, “Ready”) and as action hero (“Tere Naam”, “Wanted”, “Dabangg”) and brands are now seeking to capture these aspects. “So in Wheel and Gitanjali, you see the romantic side. Mountain Dew and Dixcy Scott capture the action hero. Rotomac taps into the activist. Chloromint brought out the comic side,” says Kamath. The ICC World Cup was this year’s biggest event and India won the cup. But in the two months after that victory, no cricketer has signed a single new brand, while Salman has signed not one but two. “This stands testimony to his appeal,” adds Kamath, refusing to divulge the names of the brands right now.

Next is what?
In the next one-and-a-half years, Salman has three releases —”Bodyguard”, “Kick”, and “Dabangg 2”. Approximately Rs 250 crore would be riding on these three films in terms of investment, but investing in Salman is giving big returns right now. Independent distributor and trade analyst Suneil Wadhwa says, “There is already a queue of distributors wanting to buy his movies at any cost as they give guaranteed returns in the first weekend. Bookings of screens for his films will go up with each release.”

“Bodyguard”, his next Eid release, is perhaps the hottest film of 2011 in trade circles. After Ready’s performance at the box office, Reliance Entertainment, who are the co-producers of the film, are getting offers that are unprecedented in motion picture business. The India theatrical business alone is attracting offers to the tune of Rs 75 crore, an increment of Rs 20 crore on the sale price of “Ready”. All other rights of Bodyguard will fetch an additional Rs 45 crore, safely making it a Rs 120 crore film on an investment of Rs 65 crore plus marketing expenses. “We are receiving great offers for Bodyguard and naturally so,” Priti Sahani of Reliance Entertainment. “Last year, when we had invested a certain amount in Salman, it did seem to be expensive but now we are on a solid economic wicket. A Salman Khan film is delivering returns on the investment,” she adds.

Patiala/Ludhiana: A huge crowd gathered at the Patilala railway station on Friday where a sequence from the upcoming movie ‘Bodyguard’ was being shot.

Unperturbed by the heat, residents of the city stood for hours to catch a glimpse of the leading actors of the movie – Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

While the crowd was lucky to catch Salman in action in the morning itself, they had to wait till 2:30 pm before Kareena Kapoor emerged on the scene to shoot her part of a train sequence.

The shooting for the film that is being directed by Atul Agnihotri went on till evening at the Patiala Railway Station.

During the shooting, a woman in the crowd fell down and hurt itself; after which Salman Khan called her to ask her about the injury and also gave her an autograph.

Ready is a success story and en route to be a huge accumulator at the box office. While for Salman Khan this is his second big money spinner in a row after Dabangg, for director Anees Bazmee the film’s success has helped in leaving behind the average run of Thank You and the poor show of No Problem. The actor and director are now all set to pair up again with No Entry Mein Entry.

“Though there were talks of differences between Salman and Anees, especially towards the later stage of the filming of Ready, none of it is impacting their professional relationship. They were committed to make the sequel of No Entry and now that Ready has worked in a big way, they are now firming up plans to bring the film on floors. It would be called No Entry Mein Entry”, informs a trade source.

It would be interesting to see whether Salman would be able to allocate dates for No Entry Mein Entry. After all he is currently busy shooting for Bodyguard and would soon be travelling across the globe for Ek Tha Tiger.

Adds another industry observer, “This is not all as he has family engagements to take care of as well. He is committed to start (tentatively titled) Sher Khan with Sohail Khan. Then there is also Dabangg with Arbaaz Khan in the pipeline. His calendar is choc-o-block.”

Anees Bazmee is undeterred though and already has a Plan B in place. Though he confirms that No Entry Mein Entry with Salman would indeed happen, he also adds that he is yet to pick and choose between No Entry Mein Entry and Hera Pheri 4 which has been commissioned to him.

“The final call is yet to be taken”, says Bazmee who is happy about being back in the big money business with Ready doing bumper business all over, “It could be either No Entry Mein Entry or Hera Pheri 4, the film I am committed to do for Firoz Nadiadwala.”

He promises though that this time around he would be cautious before starting any of the two films. “Even if everything is in place and star dates are available, I am sure I won’t be doing both films together. I have tried that earlier with Thank You and Ready and understand that it is an extremely difficult task. I would be doing only one film at a time.”

Salman Khan’s Ready unstoppable at box office

New releases fail to dent the box office collections of ‘Ready’

Competition is scared of Salman Khan. Filmmakers have flinched at the thought of releasing their movies not just alongside Ready but even a week before or after. And those who have braved the competition have found fewer footfalls coming their way, this Friday’s release Shaitan being the case in point.

Produced by Anurag Kashyap, Shaitan opened to a rather poor 20 to 25 percent response at theatres. Even the flattering reviews by critics failed to see more seat bums in theatres.

The crowds continued to be drawn to Ready, which though panned by the critics, is minting money like there’s no tomorrow. First it became the second highest grosser of the opening weekend (second only to Salman Khan’s own Dabangg), now it has rounded off its first-week collection with a figure of Rs. 69.50 crores, thereby taking the third position on the list of all-time first-week collections of Bollywood films.

Moreover, Ready’s good run is far from over. The film might touch the Rs. 100 crore mark by next Friday or Sunday, which means that Salman Khan’s supremacy over box office continues unabated.

Among the other releases of this Friday, Love Express and West Is West took a poor start. Much better was the new Hollywood release X-Men: First Class.

The coming Friday would see multiple releases: Always Kabhi Kabhi, Bheja Fry 2, Bin Bulaaye Baraati, Bhindi Bazaar Inc, Cycle Kick and My Husband’s Wife.
